Providing quality education is an objective that presents an ongoing challenge for educational systems, especially with a close association with philosophical fundamentals, sustainable development plans and global competitiveness. It is a requirement and a necessity for realizing a bright future for both coming generations and homelands, as per contemporary progress, technical development input, media of public communication and diversity of knowledge sources. This variable rhythm of reality, stunning in its development, dominated the thought of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and Minister of Finance of the U.A.E., who carries on his conscience the responsibility of his nation, its security and that's of the planet as well. He pays special attention to education as an engine for human activity, from the functions of which is to maintain balance, harmonize the high humanitarian values system and a taking a free go towards knowledge, science and human evolution. This enlightened thought focuses on the important role of educational quality in creating a common world of excellence and progress. Albeit modest effort into a small spot of the planet, but rivers were born with a drop of water. This triggered HH to announce his declaration in 1998 concerning the establishment of Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Distinguished Academic Performance, targeting Educational excellence and the sponsorship of giftedness and innovation, to improve educational performance at all levels and sectors under the supervision of the Ministry of Education in the U.A.E., honoring all groups and relevant authorities in the education sector and institutions, as well as the individuals who provide outstanding achievements and creations.
The Award range in its first year was limited to Dubai and included nine categories, but now it has become fully competent since 2000, when a high government decree establishing the Award was issued.
In 2001, the Talent Sponsorship Center was established and became a member of the World Council for Gifted & Talented Children and then the Award expanded to include the U.A.E. and the Arab Gulf States.
In 2009, the international version of the Award has been launched in in collaboration with UNESCO, "Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum / UNESCO Prize".
In 2010, the Award introduced higher education categories.
In 2015, Hamdan Award has launched the first two specialized centers in the field of gifted and innovated sponsorship, namely, "Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Center for Giftedness and Creativity” and the other one is “Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum Center for Creativity "Fab Lab UAE."
