Centre for Arab Genomic Studies (CAGS)

The Centre for Arab Genomic Studies (CAGS) was established in 2003 with the aim of reducing the burden of genetic disorders in the Arab World. Since then, CAGS has become a major global reference point for genetic information in Arabs.

Objectives

  • To raise public awareness on the importance of genetic diseases in the Arab World.
  • To identify disease-causing genes in the Arab population and develop a comprehensive open-access database of genetic diseases in the Arab World.
  • To bring together diverse expertise and resources in the Arab World to facilitate multidisciplinary research in the field of genetics and related areas.
  • To cooperate with other research and medical institutions to ensure global access to new findings and technical developments.
  • To enhance genetic literacy among healthcare professionals and the general public by providing accessible, evidence-based educational resources and programs that promote understanding of genetic diseases, their implications, and advancements in genetic research
  • To address the ethical, legal and social issues that may arise from genetic applications.
  • To develop a centre for excellence in Dubai for genetic research and clinical services targeted towards the Arab World.
  • To prevent genetic diseases by translating research achievements into well-integrated patient treatment programs.

Scientific Structure

The Core Committee of CAGS consists of a group of prominent researchers, clinicians, and geneticists from various institutions across the UAE, representing different areas within the fields of genetics and genomics. The committee members are:

  • Ahmad Abou Tayoun, Associate Professor of Genetics, and Director of the Genomics Center of Excellence, Mohammed Bin Rashid University and Al Jalila Children's Specialty Hospital, Dubai
  • Abdelaziz Tlili, Assistant Dean of Graduate Studies, Department of Applied Biology, University of Sharjah
  • Fatma Al Jasmi, College of Medicine & Health science, UAE University, Al Ain
  • Amal Al Tenaiji, Consultant Paediatrician, Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, Abu Dhabi

Strategic partners of CAGS are among the most active researchers in the Arab World and beyond in the field of human genetics. They are suggested and endorsed by the Core Committee or the Board of Trustees, and work in collaboration with the Committee in implementing the vision of the Centre.

Activities of the Centre: Catalogue for Transmission Genetics in Arabs

The Catalogue for Transmission Genetics in Arabs (CTGA) database is a continuously updated, open-access compendium of bibliographic material and observations on human gene variants and inherited, or heritable, genetic diseases in Arabs. The CTGA project helps define the scale of genetic disorders described in the Arab World and serves as a valuable resource of Arab-specific genotypes and phenotypes for clinicians.

Publications

CAGS regularly produces publications aimed at both the scientific community as well as the public. In this regard, CAGS follows an open access policy through which it makes all its publications freely available.

Conferences & Events

CAGS organizes the biennial Pan Arab Human Genetics Conference series bringing together researchers and students in human genetics from the region and around the world. Apart from these, CAGS also regularly conducts workshops providing training on different aspects of human genetics.

Research

One of the centre’s major activities is to conduct cutting edge research in the field of genetic diseases in Arab populations. CAGS is affiliated with local and regional hospitals and conducts extensive clinical and molecular analysis for patients and their families, in order to better characterize genetic abnormalities. The genetic depiction of these disorders provides valuable insights into the underlying molecular pathology of the disorder.

CAGS regularly publishes original research articles and open access publications in international peer-reviewed journals indexed by the National Library of Medicine and National Institutes of Health (PubMed). These papers provide information on previously unknown genetic mutations in Arab patients with hereditary diseases.
